Vonda Shepard to Perform
At Orange County Museum Gala

Evening to Benefit JAA and AECP

Newport Beach, CA – On Saturday, March 5, the Orange County Museum of Art will be the setting for this year’s Private Opening Night Gala benefiting Junior Achievement of Armenia (JAA) and the Armenian EyeCare Project (AECP). This event coincides with the opening of the Museum’s highly anticipated exhibit Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture, which spotlights the extraordinarily creative production and cultural influence of youth subcultures across America.

Back by popular demand, this event offers a beautiful setting for mingling and enjoying art and music. The evening’s featured entertainer will be Vonda Shepard, the striking young singer and songwriter best known for her four-year role as the resident singer at the local Boston bar frequented by the cast of the NBC series Ally McBeal. Shepard’s “Searchin’ My Soul” was the series theme song. She also wrote and performed all of the tunes on the show’s soundtrack album, which went triple platinum and became a hit around the world soon after its release in 1998.

Absolut Raspberri Vodka will be hosting martini bars and Robert’s Catering will be serving a sumptuous buffet dinner. Set both in indoor galleries and in the museum’s courtyard, the elegant evening will also feature musical entertainment and curated art tours through the museum. Supporting organizations include the Orange County Armenian Professional Society, the Orange County AGBU Young Professionals and the Orange County Triple X Fraternity.

Beautiful Losers presents contemporary work by more than 30 artists inspired by the last three decades of street culture, graffiti, punk and skateboarding, which have all had a widespread impact on the worlds of fashion, music and film. The featured artists are part of a lineage that dates back to the dynamic East Village scene of the 1980s, a moment when the renegade spirit of street culture collided with the art world with dramatic effect. Gritty, rebellious and sincere, they share an interest in pop-culture iconography, a sense of the absurd and an independent perspective from outside the mainstream.

The exhibit has been organized by the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, and is guest-curated by Iconoclast Productions. It has received significant funding from Nike and Agnes B with additional support from Curators’ Circle.

Founded in 1992, Junior Achievement of Armenia is dedicated to promoting free-market economics, democratic governance, social responsibility and ethical business practices in the Republic of Armenia via Economics and Civics education. JAA’s mission is to give today’s Armenian youth the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in tomorrow’s world. With courses in all 1400 high schools in the country, JAA now reaches 170,000 students in Armenia each year. By 2005, nearly 20% of the total population will have taken a JAA course.
